Arthur Rosset

Like veiled relics of our past, the essence of Arthur’s work seems to lurk like ghosts behind the curtain of our consciousness. [Moritz Wassmuth]

Arthur Rosset (b. 1994) has developed a painterly practice in which abstraction and figuration engage in a poetic dialogue. Inspired by ancient philosophy, Jungian psychology, and poetry, his works are created without preliminary sketches, in an improvised process directly on the surface. Forms emerge and merge into one another. From the layering of paint, transparent glazes, and ephemeral figures, pictorial spaces emerge that oscillate between memory and imagination.

His early works were experiments with color on paper, in which water became a co-creator in its own right. Since 2020, Rosset has worked primarily in oil; the paintings appear like veils in which the contours of the sublime are only hinted at. The contrasts between the color fields, form, and background create a distorted sense of depth in which the foreground and background both merge into one another and stand out sharply from one another. The titles of the works invite contemplative engagement, serving as a linguistic bridge between the visual perception of the individual work and the viewer’s associations.

Arthur Rosset, who hails from the Savoie region of France, began his artistic career at Studio H13 in Lyon, a hub of alternative culture. After spending time in London and Berlin—where he was particularly influenced by queer subculture, photography, and Surrealism—he now lives and works in Paris.
