Udo Nöger

For me, it is very important that I do not sit in front of a canvas and fill it with shapes; I am more interested in the infinite possibilities of what lies beneath the canvas.

Udo Nöger is among the most significant figures in contemporary art. His works appear as luminous, breathing spaces: reduced, precise, and full of quiet intensity. Through a unique multi-layered image structure, he succeeds in not merely depicting light, but in making it visible as an independent material.

Udo Nöger works in the tradition of Minimalism, reducing everything he does “to a point where there is no more and no less” – a statement that precisely describes the balance of his reduced aesthetic. His primary interest, however, besides striving for the reduction of visual information, is light.

The approximately eight-centimeter-deep monochrome panel paintings, composed of wood, fabric, canvas, liquids, and achromatic paint, seem to mysteriously glow from within. The light source appears to be behind the motif, forming a kind of silhouette.

Depending on the incidence of light and the viewer’s position, his works magically transform. To create this effect, the paintings consist of several layers of canvases and wafer-thin cotton cloths, stretched into a frame with precise spacing. The inner canvas, from which Nöger cuts simplified biomorphic forms, functions as the actual image plane.
After the inner composition is complete, he treats the outer surface with mineral oil as well as shades of gray, silver, and white to precisely control transparencies and opacities. Through this unique method, Udo Nöger creates luminous monochrome paintings that bundle movement and energy into extremely minimalist compositions – with the aim of making the purest possible light visible.
