Javier León Pérez

I have always strived to develop a philosophy of paper, with its own language, its own form of expression, its own way of manifesting itself in reality, and sensibility is one of its most important values. When one speaks about the sensibility of paper, one speaks about its vulnerability—but also about its versatility and its ability to adapt to its environment.

Javier León Pérez has deep roots in Seville, a city where cultures intertwine and converge. His Andalusian and Romani heritage continues to shape his relationship with concepts such as matter, rhythm, and spatiality. He views art as a space for contemplation and inner exploration. He gained his first experiences in a bronze studio, where he became acquainted with the material’s resistance and memory. Through ceramics and drawing, he eventually found his way to painting. During his studies at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, he deepened his exploration of silence and meditation. He researched Zen Buddhist philosophy, which continues to influence his artistic practice to this day.
At the heart of his interdisciplinary practice lies a delicate balance between structure and fluidity, between the visible and the intangible. Japanese washi paper, in particular, has become a central medium: through laborious processes, he folds, cuts, and assembles hundreds of fragments into organic, rhizome-like structures that evoke inner landscapes. In this context, paper appears as a “skin” that forms a permeable and sensitive boundary between the inner and outer worlds.
Light serves as a central theme in his paintings. Drawing on paper models, Javier León Pérez creates geometric and organic forms that, through the interplay of shadows and overlapping colors, evoke a meditative visual language. Viewers are invited to lose themselves in the works and immerse themselves in the abstract landscapes.
