Oksana Bergen
Oksana Bergen is a self-taught artist whose work oscillates between sculpture and installation. She creates intimate spaces of sensory perceptions. Her works address upheavals and resistance.
Oksana Bergen’s inspiration primarily lies in her biography. She grew up in a small village in Russia that was once a Gulag. Surrounded by wild nature and the failed socialism of the 1980s, she developed a deep connection to art. Early on, she began experimenting with paper and natural materials.
In 2012, she undertook a trip to China, where she intensively studied traditional Chinese painting. Here, she also learned and developed new methods for her own work with paper.
For her, the material is not just a medium, but a dialogue partner. Through cutting, embossing, and winding, paper can unfold, revealing its vulnerability and resilience, which for the artist stands as a metaphor for the human psyche. Her works are grouped into various series that not only showcase innovative techniques, such as wet winding, but also highlight the comparison between humans and paper in different ways.
